Cover 3 Cloud is a zone coverage look out of the Nickel 2-4 Odd set that rolls the strong side corner down into a cloud technique while dropping three deep defenders and shows four underneath zones. The diagram shows both outside linebackers running vertical seams into deep thirds, the nickel corner sinking into a shallow flat zone with a short crossing drop, and the two inside linebackers reading run/pass with staggered flat and hook drops while the four down linemen rush upfield. This is a zone beater against man concepts up front, and the primary read progression for the defense is corner route to seam to flat, forcing the quarterback to work backside if the strong side is capped.
Watch the slot or nickel receiver release at the snap, if he stems vertical immediately widen the cloud corner's flat drop to avoid getting picked by a natural route. Key the running back's release out of the backfield, checkreleasing backs into the flat are the first target against this zone shell so have your flat defender ready to collision. If the offense trips three receivers to the cloud side, bail your deep third defender earlier since stacked releases can rub off the underneath zone defender. Look for skinny post or dig routes attacking the seam between the hook defenders and deep thirds, this is the soft spot in Cover 3 Cloud and needs linebacker help sinking underneath. Beware of play-action rollouts to the cloud side, the flat defender must read run fake discipline or he will bite and open up the boundary throw.
Call this when you expect quick game or boundary fade concepts since the cloud corner sits underneath to jump hitches and out routes.
Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for stacked or bunch releases to the cloud side and be ready to bump your nickel corner outside before the snap.
User the flat defender on early downs to squeeze speed outs and bubble screens, then let the deep thirds play on air to protect against verticals.
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky in the same set so quarterbacks cannot key the corner alignment presnap and guess run/pass or flat/deep responsibility.
Use on second and medium or third and long when you want to sit on shorter routes while still having three deep defenders to prevent explosive plays over the top.
