Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check corner alignment for press technique and safety depth to identify if the offense suspects Cover 3 versus man. Post-snap, key the underneath defenders stunting through the line since the timing of that stunt can be exploited by quick screens or hot route outlets if the offensive line reacts fast. This beats levels concepts and drag routes that try to work underneath because the buzz defender squats in that exact throwing lane. It struggles against deep out routes and corner routes attacking the seam between the deep third and the flat, so watch for receivers stemming toward the sideline at intermediate depth. Look for the middle linebacker's drop speed into the hook zone since a delayed drop leaves a window for crossing routes right after the snap.
Usage Tips
Use press coverage pre-snap to bait quarterbacks into thinking man coverage is coming, then let the zone drops disguise the true Cover 3 shell.
Call this on early downs or third and medium when you want to sit on quick game concepts like slants and drags that try to attack the middle of the field.
User the buzz defender to jump underneath crossing routes since the linebacker dropping into that zone is the key to taking away in-cutting routes.
