Pinch 2 is a Cover 2 zone shell out of the Nickel 2-4 Odd set that pinches the two down linemen inside pre-snap to help clog interior gaps while the four remaining underneath defenders spread outside to their landmarks. The two deep safeties bail into their traditional Cover 2 halves, the corners sink into their outside underneath zones, and the two inside linebackers drop to shallow hook or curl zones just behind the pinched front. This is a zone beater designed to stop the run inside while still holding disciplined deep half integrity, so the primary read progression is playside deep half safety to underneath flat defender to the pinched interior gap fits against the run.
Defensive Reads
Watch for two receiver stacks or bunches to either side pre-snap, since the flat defenders in this zone can be overloaded by three level route combinations on one side of the field. Key the running back's release out of the backfield post-snap, since Pinch 2 is vulnerable to natural check release routes into the void behind the pinched linemen and in front of the linebacker drops. Identify if the offense is running four verticals or any deep crossing route, since the two deep safeties must stay disciplined in their halves or this play gets exposed over the top. Look at the offensive line splits pre-snap, since a wide zone or outside run scheme can outflank the pinched interior front before the corners can rally to the boundary. Post-snap, track any user controlled slot receiver or tight end working to the seam between the pinched front and the deep safety, since that void is the biggest weakness in this zone shell against man beater route concepts like a corner or seam route.
Usage Tips
Call Pinch 2 on early downs when you expect inside zone or gap runs since the pinched front collapses interior running lanes before the linebackers even have to flow.
Pre-snap, check if the offense is showing a stack or bunch look to one side, since the outside corners in this zone can get picked on quick out or flat routes if you do not user one of them.
User the deep half safety to the side of the offense's number one receiver and stay on top of any vertical shot, since the underneath defenders are responsible for flats and curls but not deep routes.
Pair this call with Cover 2 Man in the same set to disguise your coverage shell, since both plays show a similar two deep safety look pre-snap but punish different route concepts.
Use this on second and short or third and short situations when you want extra run support without fully committing to a run blitz, since the pinch technique adds gap discipline against inside runs.
