Overview

Near Pro takes the offset backfield of the Near family and pairs it with a Pro receiver alignment: split end and flanker on opposite sides, tight end attached, fullback offset behind the strong side guard, and halfback stacked behind the quarterback. Unlike Near Strong or Near Weak sets that push both backs toward one hip and telegraph directional run intent, Pro balances the picture. Defenses cannot lean a linebacker or slide the front based on backfield tilt, which keeps single high and Cover 3 shells honest and forces the defense to declare strength off your tight end rather than your backs.

The 21 personnel package is the real weapon here. Most opponents auto-flip to base or a 4-3 look when they see two backs and a tight end, which means you are attacking nickel-level route concepts with linebackers responsible for the fullback and halfback out of the backfield. Concepts like Spacing, Z Spot, and Slants get much easier when a 55 speed sub linebacker is carrying a check release back or matching the tight end on an option sit. Meanwhile the split end is isolated on the backside with no help defender in the picture, so Flanker Hook and Double Comeback give you one on one shots against whatever corner the defense leaves alone.

The play art covers the full menu. FB Dive Strong and 0 1 Trap give you interior gap runs with a lead blocker already in position, HB Inside is your standard downhill A gap carry, and PA Strong Flow and FL Drive sell the run before hitting intermediate crossers. The Gadget tag shows up through Texas and Texas KO, which are your dedicated back-out-of-the-backfield concepts and the most reliable way to isolate a linebacker in space in this entire formation.

Strengths

  • Texas and Texas KO create automatic linebacker mismatches by angle routing a back into the middle of the field, which shreds Cover 2 Man and any user who abandons the hook zone to spy the quarterback.
  • Spacing and Z Spot are elite zone beaters against Cover 3 and Cover 4, giving you three-level flood spacing with a sit route in the hole between the curl and hook defenders.
  • Slants, FL Drive, and Double Comeback attack man coverage from different depths, so you can layer a quick man beater, a crosser, and a deep comeback off nearly identical pre-snap looks.
  • The balanced backfield hides run direction, letting FB Dive Strong, 0 1 Trap, and HB Inside all run off the same alignment without giving the defense a tell to slide the front.
  • 21 personnel forces base defensive fronts, so hot routing the fullback on a flat or angle route almost always wins against a linebacker in coverage.

Weaknesses

  • Only two receivers plus a tight end means the field is condensed, so aggressive A gap nano blitzes and overload pressures reach the quarterback before Double Comeback or Flanker Hook develops.
  • The offset fullback can whiff on edge pressure and free rushers coming off the tight end side, which puts you in immediate scramble mode with limited outlet routes.
  • Cover 2 Man with a user in the deep middle takes away the Texas concept entirely, and disciplined users will camp that window once they have seen it twice.
  • No four verticals or true stretch concept exists in this set, so opponents can sit in a heavy underneath zone shell and dare you into checkdowns all game.
  • Predictable tendencies punish you fast: if you only run out of Near Pro to the strong side, opponents will slide the line and commit their user linebacker to the A gap.

Usage Tips

Use this set on second and medium or third and short where 21 personnel keeps the defense in base, then attack with Texas KO or Spacing instead of running into a stacked box.

Read the flat defender pre-snap on Z Spot and Quick Outs: if the corner is pressed and the flat is vacated, take the outside sit route immediately rather than progressing inside.

Hot route the fullback to an angle or flat route on any dropback concept, giving you a built-in blitz beater and a linebacker isolation on the same snap.

Motion the flanker inside on Flanker Hook to diagnose man versus zone, then use that read to decide between the comeback concept and a quick Slants hit on the next play.

Run PA Strong Flow after establishing FB Dive Strong and 0 1 Trap, because linebackers who have been crashing the interior gaps will bite hard and open the intermediate crosser.
