HB Inside out of the Pro Near formation is a straight downhill dive run that sends the halfback directly through the A gap behind the fullback's lead block. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking straight ahead with the fullback stepping up to seal the first inside linebacker, giving the runner a north-south crease between the guards. This is a run play designed to attack light interior boxes rather than a man or zone beater through the air, and the primary read is the fullback's kick out on the play side A gap linebacker, working backside cutback if the initial hole is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth since anything at six or fewer in the box with linebackers playing off the line gives the runner a clean crease. Watch for a Mike linebacker walked up tight to the line or a run blitz alert, both of which signal a stacked front designed to shut down this dive. This play struggles against gap-control defenses and 46 style fronts with extra defenders crashing downhill, so avoid calling it into heavy run blitz personnel. Post-snap, key the fullback's block on the play side linebacker: if he loses leverage or gets stood up, the runner needs to cut back away from the flow immediately. User-controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap pre-snap are the biggest threat, so if you see a defender spying the interior gaps, consider checking to an outside run or play action instead.
Usage Tips
Check the defensive line count before the snap and only run this against 6 or fewer men in the box since it has no read option element to punish extra defenders.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the offense on schedule and set up play action later in the drive.
Pair HB Inside with PA Strong Flow from the same Near Pro set since both plays start with identical fullback and line action, forcing linebackers to respect the run before they can drop into coverage.
If the defense stacks the box with a 4-3 look, hot route the fullback to a quick flat or keep the play as is versus a 4-2 nickel to exploit the lighter front.
Vary tempo by mixing HB Inside with FB Dive Strong so linebackers cannot key on ball carrier tendency, then call Slants or Quick Outs once the defense starts cheating up.
