FB Dive Strong is a downhill run play out of the Pro set Near formation with 21 personnel, designed to hit the interior of the defense in a hurry. The diagram shows the fullback taking a direct handoff and hitting the strong side gap behind the center and guard, with the offensive line blocking straight ahead to seal the point of attack. This is a pure run play with no route concepts or play-action elements, and the primary read progression is simple: the ball carrier reads the initial double team or down block at the point of attack and looks for the first crease before defenders fill the gap.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the depth of the middle linebacker and defensive tackles, since a shaded nose or a linebacker sitting on the line signals the defense is keying the strong side dive. This play struggles against odd fronts with a true nose tackle occupying both guards, since it removes the interior double team the fullback relies on. Watch for defenses stacking the box with eight or more defenders, which is a clear indicator the dive will be met immediately at the line. Zone coverage shells do not matter much here since there are no routes, but be aware of user-controlled linebackers spying the fullback and filling the strong side gap pre-snap. Blitz packages that send extra defenders through the strong side A or B gap will blow this play up before the fullback can build momentum, so avoid calling it into obvious run blitz tendencies.
Usage Tips
Use this play on short yardage and goal line situations where you need a quick, decisive gain without exposing the backfield to negative plays.
Call it after showing HB Inside or 0 1 Trap from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple downhill run threats and linebackers hesitate on their run fits.
Snap the ball quickly against defenses that show a light box or have linebackers backed off the line, since the fullback needs only a half second to hit the hole.
Avoid this play against stacked run fronts or when the defense shows heavy blitz looks with extra defenders crashing downhill, since there is no cutback design built in.
Pair this play in a sequence with PA Strong Flow to keep linebackers guessing between the dive action and the play-action rollout off similar formation alignment.
