Breakdown

Z Spot out of Pro Near (21 personnel) is a classic Spot concept built to attack Cover 3 zone drops. The two outside receivers run vertical seam routes up the numbers to stretch the deep thirds, while the flanker runs a quick spot route into the hook zone underneath, sitting down right in front of the underneath defenders. The RB in the backfield runs a flat/flow route to the opposite side, giving the quarterback a three-level stretch with the spot as the primary read and the flat as the checkdown against underneath pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single-high safety, which signals Cover 3 and puts the hook defenders in conflict with the spot route. Watch the flat defender and underneath linebackers post-snap since they must choose between sitting on the spot route or covering the RB in the flow route. If the defense shows two-high safeties pre-snap, expect Cover 2 or Cover 4, which can squeeze the seam routes and force the quarterback into the spot route earlier in the progression. Beware user-controlled linebackers sitting the middle hook zone and jumping the spot route, since this is the main lurk threat that shuts this concept down. Man coverage with press corners can disrupt the seam routes at the line, so check for man leverage and be ready to hot route into a quick game beater if the corners are playing tight.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, look for a single-high safety shell since this concept is built to punish Cover 3 and its natural hook/curl voids.

Hot route the backside seam into a deep out or comeback if you see the corner sitting hard on top to bait a throw.

Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the spot route settles quickly and gives a high percentage completion underneath.

Pair Z Spot with Slants or Quick Outs from this same set so defenses cannot sit on the underneath spot route without opening up quicker throws elsewhere.

Against zone heavy opponents, sequence this after Spacing to condition linebackers to sink, then hit the seam once they start jumping the spot route.
