HB Toss out of the I Form H Wing set is a pure edge run play designed to get the halfback outside the tackle box before the defense can flow to the ball. The offensive line and H Wing block down and reach outside, using the fullback and H Wing as lead blockers to seal the edge and kick out any force defender. This is a run play (no route combo or coverage beater involved), and the primary read progression starts with the play side alley defender: bounce it outside if the edge is sealed, or cut it up inside off the fullback's block if the defense flows too hard toward the sideline.
Watch for user-controlled linebackers flowing hard to the play side immediately after the snap, this is the biggest threat to blow up Toss before the lead blockers get set. Identify if the defense is in a run-fit alignment with the strong safety cheating down near the line of scrimmage, since this shrinks the edge lane and forces the ball carrier to cut inside early. Key on the play side defensive end or outside linebacker's first step, if they crash down inside to string out the fullback's kick block, the cutback lane behind them opens up. Look for user players spying or shooting gaps as a contain defender on the edge, a disciplined edge defender who stays home can force the toss back inside into traffic. Man coverage shells with aggressive corner blitzes from the play side can beat this run before it develops, while zone shells with linebackers reading run late tend to get gashed by the outside speed.
Use HB Toss when the defense is showing a light box or when linebackers are sitting deep in pass shells, since it exploits slow flow to the edge before defenders can rally.
Check the alignment of the play side outside linebacker and slot corner pre-snap, if they are crashing hard inside or blitzing off the edge, this play can get outside them for a big gain.
Motion the H Wing or fullback pre-snap if available to get a numbers advantage on the perimeter and identify whether the defense adjusts with a linebacker or defensive back to that side.
Pair HB Toss with HB Power O and HB Counter WK in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between outside and misdirection inside runs, this keeps the defense from cheating flow to either sideline.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) or in short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to stack the box for a straight downhill run, since Toss punishes lateral overpursuit.
