HB Counter WK is a gap scheme run play out of the I Form H Wing set in 22 personnel, designed to attack the weak side of the formation with a pulling guard and H-back leading through the hole. The offensive line steps play side to sell the flow before the backside guard and H wing pull across the formation to kick out the edge defender and lead through the alley, creating a misdirection look that punishes fast-flowing linebackers. This is a base run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression starts with the play side double team at the point of attack, then bounces to the pulling lead blocker to determine whether to press the hole or bounce outside based on how the edge defender is kicked out.
Check safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety often means the defense is playing base run fits and the counter has room to hit the alley once the edge is kicked out. Look at linebacker depth and flow, if the Mike and Will are stacked tight to the line in a 4-3 or 3-4 look, they can scrape over the top and blow up the counter before the pullers get set. Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the backside gap or spying the counter action, since a disciplined user defender can read the pulling guard and blow up the play in the backfield. This run is most effective against zone or man coverage shells that keep linebackers reading pass first, but it gets shut down by gap exchange defenses, scrape exchange linebacker technique, or a defensive line stunt that crosses the backside gap the counter intends to hit. Identify overload blitz fronts pre-snap, since extra defenders in the box on the play side can beat the double team before the counter action even develops.
Run this out of a heavy personnel look on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses expect base defense and are still keying pass tendencies from your dropback plays. Watch for linebacker flow pre-snap, if the Mike and Will are showing quick triggers or blitz depth, the counter action will hold them just long enough for the pulling blockers to seal the edge. Pair this with HB Power O and HB Iso to build a downhill run identity that keeps the defense honest, then mix in HB Stretch to stress edge defenders laterally once they start crashing hard on the counter action. Use manual control on the H wing or pulling guard against aggressive user linebackers who try to shoot the gap early, since the AI blocker can be beaten by a well timed jump. Avoid calling this against defenses stacked with 8 in the box or heavy A gap blitz packages, since the counter's delayed development gives extra rushers time to blow up the backfield before the kick out block is set.
