PA Power O is a play-action pass off the Power O run action out of the I Form H Wing set, designed to freeze linebackers and safeties with the fullback lead and pulling guard fake before attacking downfield. Once the run fake sells, the concept typically releases the H Wing tight end and X or Z receiver into crossing patterns while the fullback leaks out as a check down option underneath. This is primarily a zone beater that punishes teams sitting in run support or triggering downhill on the play fake, with the primary read progression starting at the deep crosser, working to the intermediate breaking route, and finishing with the fullback or backside option if the initial windows are closed.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense has stacked the box or shown run blitz looks, since aggressive fronts are exactly what this play is built to exploit. Read the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake and drop late, your crossing routes will have wide throwing lanes underneath and over the middle. Check the safety rotation before the snap, a two-high shell that stays honest post-snap can still get beat if the underneath linebackers overcommit, but if safeties trigger downhill fast this play loses its explosive upside. Watch for a user-controlled defender spying the fullback release or sitting in a shallow lurk technique, since that is the most common way defenses take away the check down and force a longer developing throw. Beware disciplined zone defenses like Cover 3 sink or Tampa 2 with linebackers that stay on their landmarks, since they can shut down both the crosser and the leak route and force you into checkdowns or scrambles.
Run this from run-heavy personnel and early down-and-distance situations like first and ten or second and short so the play fake actually threatens the defense.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the line anticipating HB Power O or HB Iso from this same set, that is your cue to call PA Power O instead.
Use hot routes to convert the underneath crosser into a quick out or speed out against teams that show Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells to give yourself a faster access window.
Sequence this play after establishing HB Power O and HB Counter WK earlier in a drive so linebackers start keying run action, then punish that aggression with the play-action shot.
Against man coverage, key on the crosser clearing the linebacker level since natural rub action from the formation creates late separation, and be ready to reset your read to the fullback leak if a defender jumps the route.
