Breakdown

HB Power O out of the I Form H Wing set is a gap scheme run play built to overload the play side edge with a pulling guard and a lead fullback. The offensive line down blocks away from the play side while the backside guard pulls to kick out the edge defender, and the fullback leads through the hole to seal off the first threat in the alley. The primary read for the ball carrier is the pulling guard, hitting downhill off his block while reading the fullback's lead into the second level for the linebacker fill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment since a single high safety usually means the defense is loading the box and Power O will need the fullback to win his kick out block cleanly. Watch the play side defensive end alignment because a wide 9 technique or crashing edge defender can beat the pulling guard to the hole before the kick out arrives. Key the Mike linebacker's depth and shade at the snap, since a downhill blitzing Mike or a user controlled linebacker flowing hard to the play side gap will collapse the running lane. This play struggles against stacked fronts with an extra defender in the box or against a strong side overload blitz that outnumbers the double team and puller. It beats light boxes out of nickel or dime personnel, spread formations that remove a linebacker, and defenses that bite on outside zone tendencies from the same formation.

Usage Tips

Run this out of base personnel on early downs when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders inside the tackles.

Check the defensive front pre-snap for a shaded nose or 4i technique on the play side guard since that alignment can clog the pulling lane and force a cutback.

If the user drops a linebacker into the A gap before the snap, hot route the fullback or motion the H Wing across to adjust the kick out assignment and preserve the edge.

Pair HB Power O with PA Power O in the same set to punish linebackers who key run flow, since the play action off the identical mesh point freezes second level defenders.

Use this on second and short or first and ten to set up HB Counter WK later in the series, since the counter action off the same gap look forces the defense to respect both the play side kick and the backside pull.
