HB Stretch out of the I Form H Wing set is an outside zone run play built to get the HB working laterally before he decides to press upfield. The offensive line and H Wing all take zone steps in the direction of the call, reaching and sealing defenders to create a running lane at the edge, with the fullback leading through the hole to pick off the first free hitter. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, it is a pure zone run play whose primary read progression is backside cutback to playside bounce, meaning the HB reads the edge defender and playside linebacker flow before deciding whether to cut it up inside or take it outside the tackle box.
Watch the playside defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the line on every snap you can user them and force a cutback lane for the HB. Identify a stacked or heavy box (seven plus defenders) pre-snap since this is the fastest way to shut down HB Stretch, the zone blocking scheme cannot consistently reach block extra bodies. Key the middle linebacker's depth after the snap, if he stays flat footed reading play action tendencies he will be late to fill the alley and the HB should press the edge. Beware of user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the edge in run support, particularly a user safety crashing down, this is the biggest threat to the bounce read and should trigger a cutback decision. Look for nano blitz packages or overload fronts to the play side, these can beat the zone scheme before the HB even gets to his read, so audible protection or check to a cutback-friendly concept if you see it.
Run HB Stretch against defenses showing light boxes with six or fewer defenders since the zone blocking scheme struggles versus heavy fronts and extra run support.
Use pre-snap motion with the H Wing to identify if the defense is in man or zone, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are facing man coverage and can expect tighter run fits.
Hot route the fullback to adjust his lead block angle if you see a linebacker walked up hard to the play side, this keeps him from whiffing on the primary blitzer.
Pair this play with HB Toss and HB Counter WK in your play-calling sequence since all three sell outside zone action but attack the edge differently, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Best called on first and second down in normal to plus territory when you want to keep the defense honest before dialing up PA Power O off the same look.
