PA Scissors is a play-action shot play out of I Form H Tight that sells the run fake before releasing a crossing "scissors" combo on the right side, with the outside receiver running a deep corner route and the slot man crossing underneath into a deep dig, while the two receivers to the left run a deep post/out combo that stretches the field horizontally. The backfield fake holds linebackers and safeties for a beat, opening throwing lanes as the routes cross at the same depth to create natural traffic for man coverage. This is a man beater built to exploit Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells, with the primary read progression starting on the crossing dig route underneath, then working out to the corner route if the safety bites on the fake or jumps the dig.
Watch for two safeties at depth pre-snap indicating Cover 2 or Cover 4, since this play is scheme-designed to beat those shells with the crossing corner and dig combo. Key the linebacker depth at the snap: if linebackers bite hard on the play-action run fake, the underneath dig route will have a wide-open throwing window immediately. Identify man coverage matchups on the outside corner route, since the scissors crossing action is meant to create a natural rub and separation against man defenders trailing the route. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a deep middle safety sinking, the dig route can get squeezed, so expect a check to the boundary corner or comeback route instead. Watch for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow crossing zone, since a spy or rat defender sitting on the dig route can jump the primary read and bait a turnover.
Use PA Scissors on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when the defense is respecting the I Form run threat, since the play fake needs a run-committed front to fully open throwing lanes.
Check the defensive backfield alignment pre-snap: two deep safeties tipping Cover 2 or four defenders spread deep for Cover 4 are the shells this play is designed to attack, since the crossing routes create natural rub against man coverage.
Read the crossing dig route first since it settles into the void created by the play fake, then progress to the corner route on the boundary if the flat defender or safety jumps the underneath crosser.
Pair this play with 26 Duo or HB Power O earlier in a drive to sell the run tendency out of I Form, then dial up PA Scissors once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill on run fits.
Hot route the outside post/out combo receiver on the backside into a deeper comeback if you see Cover 3 rolling to that side, since the base concept is more vulnerable to zone drops on that half of the field.
