PA HB Wheel is a play-action shot play out of the I Form H Tight set that sells inside run action before releasing the HB on a wheel route up the sideline for a big play threat. The H Tight end works a crossing route underneath from the strong side while the flanker runs a shallow flat route, giving the quarterback layered options if the wheel is not immediately open. This is a man beater built to exploit linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the deep wheel route first, down to the intermediate crosser, and finally to the flat route as a checkdown.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flow of the linebackers at the snap. If the play-action fake pulls both the MLB and OLB up toward the line of scrimmage, the wheel route out of the backfield is wide open in the vacated flat and seam. Key the cornerback aligned over the outside receiver on the wheel side. If he is playing a hard flat zone drop or bailing into a deep third without carrying the HB vertically, the wheel route will win over the top. This concept struggles against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells where the corner sits in the flat and a safety rotates over the top, since that combination doubles up the wheel route and closes the seam window. Look for a linebacker spying the backfield or a nickel defender staying home instead of biting on the fake. That defender can undercut the crosser and jump the wheel route before it clears the hash. Blitz-heavy defenses that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the timing of this play-action shot, so check for pre-snap blitz indicators like walked-up safeties or overloaded fronts before committing to the deep read.
Usage Tips
Call this play in run-heavy down and distance situations like second and short or first and ten, since defenses are more likely to load the box and bite on the play-action fake. Before the snap, identify if the defense is showing a single high safety look, because that alignment often means man coverage on the HB out of the backfield with no deep help over the top. If the linebacker assigned to the HB is a heavy blitzer or aggressive run defender, expect him to crash down on the fake and leave the wheel route wide open for an explosive gain. Pair this play with HB Iso or HB Power O earlier in a series to condition the defense into keying run action, then dial up PA HB Wheel once you see linebackers flowing hard downhill on early downs. Use the flat route or crosser as a built-in checkdown against zone shells like Cover 3, since the wheel route can get squeezed by a flat defender and deep third corner working together.
