HB Toss Crack is a perimeter run play out of I Form H Tight with 22 personnel that gets the ball outside quickly to the HB. The diagram shows the FB releasing outside to crack down on the edge defender while the offensive line pulls and flows toward the sideline to seal the alley, and the HB takes the toss action and reads the crack block before turning up field. This is a run play designed to attack the edge with numbers, using misdirection through the crack block to open a lane against overaggressive edge defenders or light boxes.
Defensive Reads
Key the defensive end or outside linebacker on the play side edge, if he is crashing inside or upfield the FB crack block will seal him and the HB can bounce outside. Watch the flow of the linebackers post-snap, if they diagnose the toss quickly and flow hard to the sideline this play gets strung out with no cutback lane. Identify the safety rotation before the snap, a single high safety cheating toward the play side can add an extra defender to the alley and shut down the crack concept. Look for user-controlled defenders spying the FB release, since a smart user defender can jump the crack block and blow up the entire play design. This concept struggles against disciplined outside contain defenses and quick-flowing linebackers, but it exploits gap-shooting fronts and defenses that overcommit to inside run action.
Usage Tips
Call this play when you see light boxes or defenses with only six or fewer in the box since the crack block needs a favorable numbers game outside. Check the alignment of the defensive end and outside linebacker before the snap, if they are crashing hard down the line the crack block from the FB has a cleaner angle to seal them. Use motion or a quick pre-snap check to identify if the defense is in man coverage, since corners playing tight man outside can blow up the crack action if they squat. On early downs, run this after establishing inside runs so linebackers start flowing hard inside, which widens the crack lane on the edge.
