Mtn PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint-out concept out of Goal Line Offense with 23 personnel. Post-snap, the diagram shows the HB releasing to the flat as the shallow checkdown option, a receiver working an out-and-up (deep sideline route) as the vertical shot play, and a third receiver running a shallow drag/out route underneath toward the opposite sideline. The QB fakes the run action then sprints out toward the flat side, giving a run-pass conflict for linebackers, this is a play-action sprint concept designed to punish teams selling out on the goal line run with an easy flat throw or a big-play window on the sideline route if the corner bites on the run fake.
Pre-snap, check safety depth, if both safeties are crashed into the box expect the out-and-up to be uncovered deep. Watch the flat defender, if a linebacker or slot corner sits on the HB flat route immediately, the QB should reset to the drag or eat the run action. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, the sideline out-and-up will win against trail technique almost every time. Zone shells with a hard curl-flat defender crashing on the flat can take away the checkdown, forcing the QB to hold the ball longer into pressure. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the QB sprint action, a disciplined user linebacker can jump the flat route or blow up the play-action fake before it develops.
Use this near the goal line after establishing HB Power G, Power O, or Strong Toss to get linebackers and safeties leaning run.
Sprint the QB with the flat route and read the flat defender first, if he sits the HB flat is a free access throw.
If the corner on the sideline route bites on the run fake, hit the out-and-up for a shot play into the end zone.
Hot route the drag route into a quick out if you see man coverage with a slot corner in a hard trail technique.
Pair this with Mtn PA Mesh or Mtn PA Y-Corner in the same drive to keep defenders guessing between quick game and shot plays off identical run action.
