Watch for four verticals or any stack-and-release concept, since Cover 4 Quarters is designed to have two defenders on every vertical threat and should not surrender a deep shot if played correctly. This coverage struggles against option routes from the slot and any concept that puts stress on the seam-flat conflict for the underneath zone droppers, so if the offense runs a seam-flat combo look for the linebacker or nickel defender to get caught in no-man's land. Post-snap, track the curl-flat defenders shown dropping in the diagram since a smart quarterback will throw behind them into the void created between the flat zone and the deep quarter defender. Blitz packages that pull an extra rusher from the second level will thin out the underneath zones, so if you see a nano blitz or extra pressure package paired with this shell, expect the shallow crossers and check-down routes to be the weak point rather than anything deep.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second-and-medium when you expect play-action or shot plays, since Cover 4 Quarters is built to prevent explosive plays over the top. Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are sitting deep at 10-plus yards with corners in soft outside alignment, you are almost certainly getting some form of quarters or Cover 2, so bait the offense into throwing the deep ball into a bracket. Use this alongside Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Match from the same set to disguise your shell, since all three keep two deep safeties or rotate late and force the quarterback to hold the ball an extra beat before he can diagnose the difference. Mix in Tampa 2 as a change-up look on passing downs since the pre-snap picture with two safeties deep looks nearly identical to Cover 4 but plays completely differently underneath. Hot route your underneath zone defenders to widen or tighten their drops depending on whether the offense is attacking the flats or the seams, and use this play on third-and-long when the offense is more likely to run vertical stem routes that Quarters is designed to blanket.
