Breakdown

Cover 6 Willie is a split field zone coverage out of the 4-2-5 Even Big Nickel personnel, pairing quarters coverage to one side with a sky/cover 2 style look to the other. The corner and safety to the quarters side play a two man game on the outside receiver and slot while the boundary side rolls a cloud corner and deep half safety over the top of the flat defender. Since this is a coverage call and not an offensive play, there is no route progression, but as a defender you are reading the quarterback's eyes and the flow of the running back out of the backfield to trigger your zone drops and flat responsibilities.

Defensive Reads

Read the running back release out of the backfield first since he tells you whether to expect play action or a true dropback which changes your linebacker depth and spy responsibilities. On the quarters side, key the number two receiver's release, if he pushes vertical fast the safety needs to open up and run with him instead of sitting on curl. On the sky side, watch the flat defender's cushion, if he sinks too deep he opens up the underneath out and speed out combo that beats this shell. This call is vulnerable to spot concepts and stick routes that flood the underneath zones faster than your linebackers can sink, so user a linebacker to jump the shallow crosser if you see three receivers stacked to one side. Cover 6 Willie gets exposed against four verticals if your deep half safety on the sky side gets caught peeking at the run fake, so discipline your eyes to the number two receiver's vertical stem every snap.

Usage Tips

Use Cover 6 Willie on second and long or third and medium when you expect the offense to attack one side of the field with a boundary fade or field side deep shot since the split field shell lets you play quarters to the passing strength. Motion check pre-snap to identify if the offense is trying to force you into a coverage bust by overloading the quarters side with three receivers. Hot route your slot corner into a press alignment on the quarters side if you anticipate a quick out or speed out beater. Pair this call with Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 2 Contain in the same series so quarterbacks cannot key the safety rotation presnap and start guessing wrong against your shell disguises. Use the flat defender to squeeze underneath hitches and stick routes on the sky side while trusting your deep half safety to close on any go route trying to split the numbers.
