Presnap, identify if the offense is running a heavy crossing or mesh concept since the robber defender is designed to sit in that window and jump inside breaking routes. Watch running back and tight end releases first because Cover 1 Robber is vulnerable to flood concepts and seam routes if the robber gets pulled toward the wrong side. Post snap, key the free safety depth to confirm true single high versus a late rotation disguise, then track whether the robber defender bites on double moves or stays patient in his zone drop. This shell is exposed to any offense that clears out the middle level with vertical routes and attacks the flat with a fast man beater since the corners are on an island in man coverage. It gets shut down by fullback delay releases and wheel routes out of the backfield because the linebackers covering those responsibilities can get picked or lose contain against speed mismatches.
Bait the robber defender by looking off to one side of the field before committing to a crossing route on the other side since the AI or user robber will often bite on eye discipline.
