Cover 3 Match out of the 4-2-5 Even set is a zone coverage defense that plays traditional Cover 3 rules underneath while allowing the deep defenders to match and carry vertical routes based on the route distribution from the offense. The three deep defenders (both corners and the free safety) sink to their thirds but convert to man principles if a receiver threatens their zone vertically, which closes the classic Cover 3 holes like the deep middle seam and the flat to hole read. Underneath, the Mike and Will linebackers along with the slot corner and strong safety rob shorter zone beaters, so the primary defensive read progression is to identify the number two receiver to the trips side first since that route dictates whether the flat defender sinks or the safety rotates over the top.
Watch the number two receiver to the strong side immediately after the snap, since his route stem tells the flat defender and safety whether to sink into zone or convert to man match. This coverage shuts down deep vertical shots and four verticals concepts because the corners and free safety match up on any receiver stemming into their deep third, taking away the explosive play. It is vulnerable to quick game man beaters like slants and quick outs against the flat defenders before they can read and react, so watch for offenses attacking the underneath match zones with speed in space. Post snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop depth. If he sits too shallow chasing a checkdown, offenses can hit a seam route or deep dig behind him since the match rules require the safety to widen for the route triangle. Beware of user controlled slot corners jumping underneath routes too aggressively, since that opens the deep third behind them to double moves or corner routes if the receiver stacks the defender at the break point.
Call this out of the Big Nickel 4-2-5 personnel when you expect 11 or 12 personnel from the offense since the extra defensive back gives you better match leverage against slot receivers running option routes.
Use this on early downs and second and medium situations because the match rules take away big chunk plays over the middle while still keeping run support honest with two off ball linebackers.
Pre snap, check the safety alignment. If both safeties are deep at 10 to 12 yards with corners playing outside leverage, you are almost certainly getting this shell, so bait the quarterback into thinking it is a static Cover 3 before the corners convert to man on vertical releases.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Buzz Match Wk and Cover 1 Robber in the same play calling sequence so the offense cannot key blitz packages off your safety depth, since all three plays start from a similar pre snap picture.
User the deep middle third defender and spot drop to rob any crossing route or dig concept, since match rules leave the flat defender vulnerable if you sit too long in the box and let the seam window open.
