Pounder is a blitz package out of the 4-2-5 Even Big Nickel package designed to bring extra pressure while still maintaining coverage integrity behind it. This is a defensive play that pairs a linebacker or DB blitz look with a zone shell behind it, aiming to disrupt the quarterback's timing before route combos can develop downfield. The primary read for the defense is to identify the blitzers pre-snap and then key on the quarterback's eyes to jump underneath routes or rally to the ball if the blitz gets picked up.
Pre-snap, check the running back alignment and offensive line splits to confirm the offense is not sliding protection toward your blitzer. Post-snap, key the quarterback's first two steps to see if he is going to a hot route beater against the blitz. Watch for a lurking underneath defender that can jump quick game throws like slants and stick routes while the pressure gets home. This beats offenses relying on max protect dropback passes since the extra rusher forces a quick, often inaccurate throw. Cover 3 Match or Cover 4 Quarters shells behind a similar blitz look are more effective against play-action rollouts, so if the offense shows run action first, Pounder can get exposed if the edge rusher is caught out of position.
Use Pounder on third and medium to third and long when the offense is likely to call a dropback pass with a deeper route concept.
Check the offensive formation pre-snap for empty sets or spread looks that leave fewer blockers to account for the extra rushers.
Send the user-controlled defender on the most likely blitz lane and manually spy the running back if you see check release protection.
Mix this into a sequence with Cover 6 Invert or Cover 4 Palms on earlier downs so the offense cannot anticipate the pressure look based on formation alignment.
Avoid calling Pounder against empty backfield spread formations where the extra rusher can be picked up easily, since the coverage behind it can get exposed on quick outs and slants.
