This is a zone beater shell, not an offensive play, so the primary read progression is your own: identify the number two receiver's release to trigger the correct match rule from your safeties and nickel defender.
Read the number two receiver's release first since that dictates whether your safety sinks into a deep quarter or matches down on a crosser. Watch the slot cornerback and nickel defender for their reaction to in-cut breaking routes, since Cover 9 is vulnerable to quick option routes and shallow crosses that beat the match rules before they trigger. This shell shuts down four verticals and deep dagger concepts because the safeties keep outside leverage while matching vertical stems. It gets exposed by RPOs and stick concepts to the flat if your underneath defenders are late diagnosing run action, so key the running back's protection assignment immediately after the snap. Man beater route combos like slot fades and rub routes can still win against this if your corners lose their match assignment, so user the deep half defender to help over the top on any one on one vertical threat you see developing.
Use Cover 9 on early downs and second and long when you expect play-action rollouts or shot plays off max protect looks, since the quarters shell holds up against verticals.
