Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of the 4-2-5 Even set is a four deep, three under zone shell built to take away the deep ball while still giving you numbers to defend the run. The two deep safeties, two cornerbacks divide the field into quarters vertically while the Mike, SS, and slot defender rob underneath crossers and flood routes. This is a zone coverage play, not a blitz or man beater, and your primary read progression is to identify the number two receiver to the trips or slot side first since that receiver determines whether the corner and safety on that side play a true quarter, quarter, quarter, half rule or bracket. From there, work inside out to the middle of the field defenders to close throwing lanes on deep in cuts and dig routes before the underneath zone defenders wall off shallow crossers.

Defensive Reads

Read the number two receiver's release immediately off the snap since a vertical release tells the corner and safety to play true quarters rules while a shallow or out release lets the safety rob underneath. Key the running back out of the backfield: if he releases into a flat or seam route, your underneath zone defender must widen quickly or you will give up an easy checkdown for extra yards. Watch for four verticals and stack or bunch releases, both of which stress the seams between the deep quarter defenders, so user control a safety to squeeze the throwing window on any post or seam route. This coverage is vulnerable to quick game concepts like slants and hitches thrown before the underneath defenders can settle, so expect it to get picked on against rhythm passing offenses. It shuts down play-action shots and double moves well because of the two deep safety help, but it can be exploited by RPOs and run plays if your linebackers bite too hard on run fakes and vacate their underneath zone drops.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or in obvious pass situations when you expect four verticals or play-action shots down the field since the two deep safety shell takes away explosive plays. Pre-snap, check the receiver alignment: if the offense stacks three or four receivers to one side, consider shifting your slot defender or user controlling the underneath zone defender to that side to jump the flood concept. Hot route the flat defenders into a hard curl-flat if you are getting picked apart underneath, since Cover 4 Quarters naturally leaves the shallow middle open against spread sets. Pair this with Cover 4 Palms and Cover 3 Match in the same series so the offense cannot key run fits versus flood concepts based on your shell alone. Use user control on one of the deep safeties to rob the post or dig route if you diagnose the quarterback staring down one side pre-snap, since the CPU AI safety can be late to help on double moves.
