Cover 2 Contain is a zone defense out of the Even 4-2-5 Big Nickel set that keeps two deep safeties over the top while the corners and outside contain defenders squeeze the flanks and force everything back inside. The two deep defenders split the field into halves to take away vertical shots down the seams and sidelines, while the underneath five drop into short and intermediate zones with contain responsibility on the edges to eliminate outside run lanes and bootleg escape routes. This is a zone beater specifically designed to shut down sideline routes, corner routes, and edge runs, and the primary read progression for the offense trying to attack it should start with the deep middle void between the two safeties before working down to any seam or flat conflict created by the underneath defenders.
Read the quarterback's eyes immediately after the snap, since Cover 2 Contain baits throws to the deep outside where the corner or contain defender is squeezing hard. Watch for streaking outside receivers trying to work the deep third boundary, since the contain rule keeps the flat defender wide and can create a natural picture for a corner route sit if timed wrong. Key the running back and any check release, since the underneath zone defenders must react quickly to flare routes and screens or the offense will exploit the flat area vacated by contain responsibilities. User the deep half safety to your strength and let the AI handle the other half, then close hard on any corner route or deep out that tries to split the two safeties.
Mix this in after showing Cover 2 Man or Cover 2 Match from the same formation so the quarterback cannot key the safety depth pre-snap and misreads the contain rules on the edge.
Avoid calling this on third and long against trips or four verticals concepts, since the deep middle seam can be exposed if your underneath defenders do not get depth quickly enough.
Pair it with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters in your play-calling sequence to disguise whether you are playing two deep safeties or rotating to a single high shell.
