Cover 4 Palms is a defensive quarters coverage call out of the Even 4-2-5 Big Nickel personnel, designed to defend both the run and the pass with a two-high safety shell that reads number two to the slot. The corners play trap technique on the outside receiver while the safeties key the number two receiver, sinking to divide the deep quarters if he releases vertical or squatting on him if he runs a flat or out route, which is the primary read progression for the defense. This call is a strong zone beater against smash and stick concepts and holds up well versus outside run action thanks to the safety and corner exchange on the boundary.
Read the number two receiver immediately off the snap since he dictates whether the safety sinks deep or squats on the flat, this is the core key of the Palms concept. Watch for smash concepts to the trap side, since the corner is sitting on the quick out or hitch route while the safety has the corner route over the top. Identify quick game and stick concepts from the slot, because if the number two receiver sits down in the flat the safety will jump it for a potential turnover. This call can get exposed by deep crossers and post routes from the number two receiver that clear out the flat defender before the safety can adjust his run fit. Watch out for four verticals or any concept that stresses both safeties deep, since Palms rules can create a soft spot in the middle of the field if the linebackers do not get enough depth on their drops.
Use Cover 4 Palms on early downs when you expect the offense to attack the flat or run smash concepts to the boundary, since the trap technique on the corner is built to jump those routes. Pre-snap, identify if the offense has a strong number two receiver who can threaten vertically, since your safety has to make a quick key read on his release. Motion check the offense before the snap to confirm you are not walking into a bunch or stack look that can confuse the trap and MOD rules on the corner. Pair this call with Cover 4 Quarters and Cover 2 Match in the same play-calling sequence so the offense sees a similar two-high shell presnap but gets different rules and rotations after the snap. Bring in SS Blitz 2 or WS Blitz 1 from this set on third down to disguise pressure out of the same shell and keep the quarterback guessing between coverage and blitz.
