Cover 6 is a split field zone coverage that combines quarters coverage to one side of the field with sky (cover 2) coverage to the other, giving you the best of both worlds against boundary and field concepts. Out of the Even 4-2-5 Big Nickel personnel, the corner and safety to the quarters side play a 2-read man match technique on the outside receiver while the sky side corner sits in a hard flat zone with the safety rotating down to support the deep half. Your primary read progression starts by identifying strength of the formation, then working from the quarters side deep half safety to the sky side corner to diagnose whether the offense is attacking the boundary or the field, and finally checking the underneath flat and curl defenders for any leaky crossers.
Watch for the offense to attack the sky side corner with hitch and out combinations since that defender is playing off and reading run first Diagnose trips or bunch formations pre-snap, since Cover 6 can get stressed by three level flood concepts if the underneath defenders do not communicate zone landmarks Key the running back release out of the backfield, if he releases to the sky side flat that defender must widen and the linebacker needs to wall off any leaking crosser Post snap, look for the quarters side safety to trigger quickly on any vertical seam or wheel route since he has run support responsibility and can be late if he bites on play action This shell is vulnerable to smash concepts to the sky side and double moves against the quarters corner if he presses too aggressively at the line
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if both safeties are showing deep at 10 to 12 yards you are likely getting a two high shell that fits Cover 6 well against four verticals and stick concepts
Use this play on early downs or second and medium situations where you want to stay honest against both run and pass without overcommitting a defender into the box
Hot route the flat defender on the sky side to a curl or hook if you are facing heavy flood concepts to that side, this tightens the underneath window against out and flat combos
Pair Cover 6 with Cover 6 Invert and Cover 6 Willie in the same set to disguise which side is getting quarters versus sky treatment, forcing the quarterback to guess post snap
User the deep half safety on the quarters side to jump any dig or deep in route since that defender has help underneath from the corner playing man match technique
Avoid calling this against empty formations with a strong side stack, since the sky corner can get picked on quick out and slant combos if the flat defender bites on run action
