Breakdown

Tampa 2 out of the Tite 5t 3-4 Base 5-2 personnel is a zone coverage shell built to defend against deep shots while keeping everything in front underneath. The two deep corners sink into deep third zones outside the numbers, the two outside linebackers on the edges drop into flat zones, and the two inside defenders (Mike and Sam or a nickel type piece) drop into shallow hook/curl zones underneath. The Mike linebacker (the olive colored defender in the middle) carries a deep vertical zone drop down the middle of the field, functioning as the Tampa 2 rat that closes the traditional Cover 2 hole between the two deep safeties. This is a zone beater killer against four verticals and deep post routes, with the primary read progression starting at the middle hook defender to see if he gets enough depth to take away the deep middle, then working out to the flat defenders to see if underneath throws are open.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety alignment for two high safeties, which confirms the Cover 2 shell before the Mike linebacker rotates into his deep hole drop. Post-snap, key the Mike linebacker's drop depth since he is the primary defender tasked with taking away deep middle throws and posts that normally torch standard Cover 2. Watch the flat defenders (outside linebackers here) for their break on quick outs and hitches, since Tampa 2 is naturally weak underneath in the flats if those defenders get bypassed by RPO reads. This shell beats four verticals, deep post combos, and dig routes over the middle since the rat linebacker sinks to disrupt exactly those throwing lanes. This shell can be exploited by out and up double moves on the outside corners and by quick game route combos underneath if the flat defenders are late getting to their zone drop. Look for offenses to attack the seams between the flat zone and hook zone with option routes, which is the classic user beater versus Tampa 2 if the linebackers do not get proper width.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or third and long when you expect the offense to test the middle of the field with vertical route combos.

Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running four verticals or deep crossers, since the Tampa 2 rat linebacker is designed to erase that exact concept.

User the Mike linebacker in the middle hole zone so you can manually get depth on his drop and eliminate the seam throw that AI controlled Mike drops sometimes miss.

Pair this call with Cover 2 Invert or Cover 2 Invert Hard Flat from the same set to disguise your shell pre-snap, since both formations look identical before the snap but rotate coverage differently.

Avoid calling this on obvious run downs since the underneath hook defenders can be vulnerable to inside runs if the linebackers bite too hard on their zone drops.

Mix in Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match afterward to keep quarterbacks guessing between two deep safeties and three deep safeties looks.
