Breakdown

Cover 4 Quarters out of the Tite 5t 3-4 Base 5-2 shows a two deep safety, two deep corner shell with four defenders splitting the field into quarters on the back end. Underneath, both outside linebackers drop to the flats with the mike and the strong side backer working inside hook to curl zones while three defenders show blitz arrows in the box before dropping into their landmarks. This is a zone coverage call built to take away four verticals and deep shots while still getting numbers to the flats, so the primary read progression for the defense is to identify any vertical stem from the number two receiver first (safety to WR2) before working out to the flat defender on the number one receiver.

Defensive Reads

Read the number two receiver's release first, if he stems vertically the safety to that side should stay on top and never let him get on top of the coverage. Watch for four verticals or seam shots, this call is designed to bracket those with safety help over the top and underneath zone defenders sitting in the throwing lanes. Identify quick game and stick concepts as the main threat to this coverage since the flat defenders have to cover ground and can be baited by double moves out of the slot. Pre-snap, check corner alignment, if corners are playing off with outside leverage that confirms the quarters shell and tells you the offense should attack the seams and intermediate crossers. Post-snap, watch the mike and strong side backer drop depth into the hook to curl zones, if they sit too shallow, running backs and tight ends can settle in behind them for easy completions.

Usage Tips

Call this out of Tite 5t when you expect four verticals, mesh concepts, or deep crossers designed to attack single high looks.

Pre-snap, confirm both safeties are aligned at depth before the snap since Cover 4 Quarters leans on that two high shell to bracket vertical routes.

Use this as a change of pace after running Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Hard Flat so the offense cannot key on safety rotation and diagnose your shell pre-snap.

On third and medium to long, pair this with Mlb Cross Fire 3 or Saw Blitz 1 in the same play call sequence to disguise whether you are bringing extra rushers or dropping into a zone shell.

Hot route the flat defenders to squeeze underneath if you are getting picked apart by quick game, since the outside linebackers have the flexibility to sink or widen based on receiver stems.
