Dbl Safety Blitz brings both safeties off the edges on delayed paths, shown by the two red lines starting deep at the X positions and angling down hard toward the line of scrimmage. Underneath, four defenders drop into short zone drops (the vertical arrows) while two hook/curl defenders sit at the second level to rob crossers, and the outside corners appear to hang wide off the edges. This is a five-man pressure zone blitz out of the 3-4 Base 5-2 personnel, designed to bring extra heat off both safeties while still playing a zone shell underneath, and it is not a man beater since there is no press or lock coverage shown. The primary read for the quarterback attacking this is to identify the safety blitz pre-snap, then work a quick hot route or slant into the vacated zone where the safety walked down from, since that area is now undermanned in the shell.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since both safeties walking down toward the box is the biggest tell for this blitz look. Watch for offenses that check into hot routes or sight adjustments against extra pressure, since a delayed safety walk-up can be exposed by a smart quarterback who reads leverage. This beats slow developing play-action rollouts and deep drop dropback passing since the edge pressure from the safeties arrives quickly before protection can adjust. It struggles against quick game concepts like slants and stick routes that get the ball out before the safety rush closes, since the underneath zone drops are still settling into their landmarks. Post-snap, track whether the offensive line slides protection toward the safety blitz, and if a running back or tight end stays in to chip, expect the interior rush lanes to be the answer instead.
Usage Tips
Disguise the safety blitz by showing a two-high shell pre-snap and delaying the safety walk-up until just before the snap to bait the quarterback into a bad presnap read.
Pair this with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters from the same Tite 5t set so opponents cannot key on safety depth as a tell for pressure.
Use this on passing downs, especially 3rd and medium to long, where the offense is more likely to take a five or seven step drop and give the extra rushers time to close.
User the underneath hook defender and spy any scrambling quarterback tendencies, since the four man zone drop underneath is thin against crossers if the blitz does not get home fast.
Mix in Mlb Cross Fire 3 or Weak Blitz 1 as complementary calls to keep the same pre-snap look while varying which defenders actually bring pressure.
