This is a zone beater against horizontal stretch concepts, with the primary read starting at the flat defenders squeezing any speed out or flat routes before working back to the deep third defenders reading the quarterback's eyes on vertical shots.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the offense is running trips or bunch to one side, since that formation often attacks the flat defender's aggressive drop with a quick pick or rub route. Post-snap, key the hard flat defenders first since they are designed to squat on flat and speed out routes rather than sink into a traditional cushion. Watch for crossing routes attacking the two underneath zone defenders at the hash marks, since a well-timed drag or dig can find the seam between the flat defender and the deep third defender. This coverage is vulnerable to double moves and out and up routes against the flat defenders since their aggressive downhill jump can be exploited if the receiver sells the flat route first. Against play-action, keep discipline with your deep third defenders and avoid biting on run fakes, since a blown deep third assignment leaves a wide-open lane for a vertical shot down the sideline.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or second and medium when you expect quick game or bootleg action to the flat since the hard flat defenders are aggressive at squatting on those routes.
Check the pre-snap alignment for stacked or bunch receivers to the field side, since that often signals a quick out or flat route the hard flat defender is designed to jump.
Use the flat defender's aggressive drop to bait quarterbacks into throwing hitches or flat routes, then user the underneath defender to jump the route for a pick six opportunity.
Pair this play with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match in the same set to disguise your flat defender leverage and keep quarterbacks guessing on which underneath defender is sitting hard versus reading through to the deep third.
Avoid calling this against heavy vertical stacks or trips formations since the deep thirds can get stressed if the offense clears out the underneath zones and attacks the seams.
