Breakdown

Cross 3 Fire is a Cover 3 zone blitz out of the 3-4 Odd Base 5-2 personnel that brings a five man fire zone pressure with a line stunt up front. The diagram shows four underneath defenders crashing hard off the edges and through the interior gaps while three deep defenders (two purple and one olive) drop into a three deep shell with the outside corners sinking to the flats and the middle defender bracketing the deep third. This is a zone blitz designed to disguise pressure while still holding three deep, so the primary read is diagnosing the QB drop and blitz picture, and defenders should progress from confirming the deep middle third holds before flowing to the fire zone flats and hooks underneath.

Defensive Reads

Watch the offensive line's protection slide pre snap, since heavy slide protection to one side leaves the opposite rusher in the fire zone with a clean lane. Key the running back's release, if he stays in to block the fire zone pressure is likely to overwhelm the protection and force a quick, inaccurate throw. Post snap, track the two purple flat defenders, they are responsible for jumping any quick out or flat route that man beater concepts try to attack immediately after the snap. This play is vulnerable to spot passes into the vacated underneath zones between the rushing lane and the deep thirds, so user the middle hook defender if the QB looks to sit a receiver in that window. Against play action, the deep three defenders must stay disciplined, since biting on the run fake opens the deep middle third for a shot play over the top.

Usage Tips

Disguise this call by mixing it in after a series of standard Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Match calls so the offense cannot key on the blitz look pre snap.

Use the line stunt to your advantage against man protection schemes, since the crossing rushers create natural picks that beat one on one blocking up front.

Bait the QB into a quick throw by showing a soft shell, then trust the underneath defenders to jump the hot route since the fire zone drops are designed to squeeze passing lanes immediately after the snap.

Call this on third and short to medium situations where offenses expect a standard blitz and instead get a disguised zone blitz that still has three deep defenders over the top.

Pair this with Storm Brave 1 or Pinch Dog 2 Press in the same series to keep the offense guessing between man pressure and zone pressure out of the same personnel.
