Cover 3 Sky is a zone defense out of the 3-4 Odd Base 5-2 personnel that drops three deep defenders and rolls the strong safety down into the flat as the "sky" run support and underneath curl/flat defender. The diagram shows both outside linebackers and the Mike dropping to deep thirds while the two inside defenders sink into curl/flat zones underneath, creating a two-deep-under, three-deep-over shell against the pass. Against the run this alignment gives you an extra flat defender to funnel ball carriers back inside to pursuit, making it a strong zone-based call versus both stretch runs and quick game route combos.
Pre-snap, check the offensive formation for a strong-side bunch or stack, since Sky rotation puts extra eyes and speed to that side to handle quick outs and flat routes. Post-snap, watch the two underneath zone defenders shown sinking to curl/flat, they are your primary users to jump hitches, quick outs, and shallow crosses before the ball is thrown. This shell is vulnerable to deep out-and-up or double-move routes that attack the seam between the deep third defenders and the underneath curl/flat zones, so keep an eye on any receiver stemming vertically before breaking outside. Against RPOs, key the offensive line for run blocking while still respecting the pass since the sky safety must read run/pass quickly to fill the alley without abandoning coverage responsibility. Watch for four verticals concepts, since three deep defenders can be stressed horizontally if the offense clears out the underneath zones with all four receivers releasing vertically.
Call this on early downs when you expect a balanced run pass look, since the Sky rotation gives you numbers versus outside runs while still holding three deep defenders against verticals.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the offense is running a bunch or stack look designed to overload one flat, then user the sky safety to jump the shorter flat route.
This is primarily a zone beater killer, not a man beater, so expect it to struggle against rub routes and pick concepts that manipulate the underneath zone defenders' eyes.
Pair this call with Cover 3 Match or Cover 1 Robber in your play-calling sequence so opponents cannot key the deep thirds shell purely off pre-snap alignment.
On third and medium, user the middle linebacker to rob any drag or crossing route since the diagram shows him sinking into an underneath zone rather than blitzing.
