Over Wide is the defensive sub package variation inside 3-3-5 that widens the front to attack the edges instead of crowding the interior. The tags tell the story: RLE, RRE, RDT, and NT give you a four man shell of down linemen in a Big Nickel 4-2-5 personnel grouping, while SUBLB and SLCB confirm the extra hybrid defender walked into the box or the slot. Compared to the standard 3-3-5 sets that stack three linebackers behind a three man line, Over Wide trades a stacked second level for a wider first level, which means faster natural edge pressure without dialing up an exotic blitz and less reliance on linebacker timing to generate heat.
The widened ends matter for how the rush develops. Your right and left ends align further outside the tackles, so they win the corner faster on four man pressures like Cover 3 Sky, Cover 2 Man, and Cover 4 Quarters, and they seal the perimeter against outside zone and stretch runs. The interior tags (RDT and NT) still occupy both A gaps, so you are not giving up the middle the way a pure wide nine front would. That balance is why plays like Tampa 2, Cover 6, and Invert 2 Sim work here: you can play coverage with four and still force the offense to throw on your schedule.
Big Nickel 4-2-5 personnel is the real weapon. You get a fifth defensive back (the SLCB tag) matched on slot receivers and tight ends instead of asking a linebacker to run with them, which erases the bunch and trips mismatches that beat base 3-3-5 sets. The blitz menu is deep: Double CB Blitz brings both corners off the edge behind the wide alignment, Sam Blitz 3 and Will Blitz 3 add a linebacker with three deep behind it, Mike Sam Cross 3 crosses the second level to confuse slide protection, and Free Fire 3 plus Fire Man give you six man heat from an alignment that already looks like a four man rush. Cover 3 Sim Pressure and Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 round it out with simulated pressure and disguised shells.
Use this set on second and long and third down when the offense is in three or four wide personnel, since Big Nickel 4-2-5 matches their spread without exposing a linebacker in the slot
Pinch your defensive line pre snap when you read a heavy run look, then rely on Cover 3 Sky or Cover 4 Quarters to keep your safeties clean over the top
Alternate Cover 3 Sim Pressure and Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 to show the same shell and rotate coverage after the snap, which forces the quarterback to hold the ball for your wide ends
User control the SUBLB in Tampa 2 or Cover 6 so you can take away the deep middle hole or jump the intermediate crosser that would otherwise beat two man second levels
Save Double CB Blitz and Mike Sam Cross 3 for obvious dropback situations, and show blitz then back out with Cover 1 Hole or Cover 1 Robber to bait a checkdown throw into your hole player
