Cover 3 Sim Pressure is a defensive play out of the 3-3-5 Over Wide set that brings a simulated four man rush while dropping eight into coverage behind it. The sim pressure design sends interior linebackers or a slot defender on a delayed rush while a down lineman drops into a shallow zone, disguising where the fourth rusher is coming from. Behind the rush, the defense plays Cover 3 with three deep zone defenders splitting the field and four underneath zone defenders, making this a strong zone beater counter against quick game passing attacks. Primary read progression for the defense starts with identifying the quarterback's eyes to bait a throw into the shallow hole created by the dropping lineman, then rallying to the flat and deep thirds as the play develops.
Watch for offenses running quick game concepts like slants and stick routes since the delayed dropper in the shallow zone is designed to sit in those throwing lanes and bait an interception. This beats hot route heavy man beater concepts and quick pass RPOs because the four man rush with an extra shallow defender clogs sight lines for the quarterback while three deep defenders erase any vertical shots. It struggles against play-action rollouts and boot action since the delayed rush timing can be exploited if the quarterback escapes the pocket before the sim pressure gets home. Presnap, key the offensive tackles and tight ends for release patterns since a hard release outside signals a route the sim pressure numbers advantage in the box wants to attack downhill against. Postsnap, if the user controlled quarterback identifies the dropping lineman quickly and throws opposite the pressure side, rally your flat defender immediately since that hole is the primary vulnerability of this call.
Call this on early downs like first or second and medium when offenses expect base coverage since the sim pressure disguise often catches quarterbacks off guard on their presnap protection reads.
Use the Big Nickel 4-2-5 personnel to your advantage by keeping your best coverage defenders on the field against spread formations, then user the dropping defensive lineman to jump quick out routes and slants.
Mix this with Cover 3 Sky and Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 from the same set so quarterbacks cannot distinguish your zone shell from your pressure package based on presnap alignment alone.
If the offense checks into empty formations, be ready to check into Sam Blitz 3 or Will Blitz 3 instead since sim pressure loses some of its deceptive value when there is no back to account for in protection.
Bait the quarterback into throwing hot into the shallow zone by showing a wider presnap gap, then user the delayed rusher to time the blitz for max disruption on the throwing lane.
