Cover 4 Quarters out of the 3-3-5 Over Wide set is a zone shell defense built to protect against deep shots while keeping four defenders in position to jump underneath routes. Four defensive backs split the field into deep quarters, with the two safeties reading the number two receiver to decide between staying deep or rolling down to help on run support or shorter routes. This is a zone based defense designed to take away vertical stretches and four verts concepts, and the primary read progression for the defense starts with the safeties keying the slot receivers before diagnosing the quarterback's eyes on curl to flat combinations underneath.
Watch the slot receivers at the snap since your safeties are triggered by their release, if the slot pushes vertical the safety stays deep, if the slot breaks off short the safety can roll down to help underneath Pre-snap, check cornerback depth and safety width, if the corners are playing too tight to the line you are vulnerable to double moves and go routes on the outside This coverage is strong against four verticals and mirrored post routes since it keeps two deep defenders on each half of the field, forcing the quarterback to check down It is exposed against quick game and RPO concepts that attack the flat before the underneath zone defenders can sink, so watch for stick and flat combinations Post snap, identify any user controlled lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field since that defender can bait quarterbacks into throwing intermediate crossers directly into coverage
Call this on early downs or obvious passing situations where you expect the offense to test the deep middle with four verts or post wheel combos
Check the pre-snap alignment of the offense and if you see two receivers stacked or bunched to one side, be ready to adjust your slot corner's leverage with a hot route to prevent quick separation
User the deep safety on the passing strength side so you can jump any comeback or dig route that tries to sit down in the seam between the quarter defenders
Pair this call with Cover 3 Sky or Cover 3 Cloud Show 2 in your play calling sequence so quarterbacks cannot key one deep safety shell and must respect both three deep and four deep coverage looks
Avoid calling this on third and short since the underneath defenders can be late reacting to quick hitting flat routes and shallow crossers
