TE Flat out of Weak I with 22 personnel is a quick-hitting man beater built around the tight end releasing to the flat while the fullback and halfback carry out play fakes or short check downs to hold linebackers. The primary read starts with the TE in the flat against man coverage, then progresses to any underneath crossing routes or the backfield outlet if the flat defender sits or the linebacker widens with the tight end. This is a pass play, not a play-action or RPO, so the offensive line is in straight protection which makes it vulnerable to interior pressure if you hold the ball too long.
Defensive Reads
Watch the flat defender's depth and leverage pre-snap: if he is aligned tight to the line of scrimmage in man coverage, the TE flat route can get jammed and disrupted immediately. Identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, since the flat zone defender will often sit and read the quarterback's eyes, making the initial TE flat throw risky against a good user-controlled lurk defender. Key the middle linebacker's drop: if he widens to take away the flat or fullback route, that opens up crossing routes or seams behind him. Beware of nano blitzes or edge pressure packages since the straight drop back protection scheme has minimal extra blocking help against overload blitzes. Look for corners playing off coverage or bailing into zone drops post-snap, which signals the flat throw window will close quickly and the quarterback needs to progress to his second read.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or third and short when you need a high percentage completion against man coverage or blitz-heavy defensive tendencies.
Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender: if a corner or safety is sitting directly over the tight end's release lane, hot route him to a quick out or slant instead to avoid getting jammed at the line.
Against zone shells, look to the backside underneath routes since the flat defender in Cover 2 or Cover 3 will often sink and take away the TE flat throw, so your second read becomes critical.
Pair this play with 95 Willie or 94 Will in your call sequence to keep the defense guessing between quick flat throws and deeper shot plays out of the same Weak I look.
Combine with HB Gut or Counter F on early downs to set up run fits, then come back to TE Flat once linebackers start creeping up expecting run action.
