Hook Ins out of the Weak I formation is a zone beating passing concept built around hook and curl routes that settle into the soft spots between linebacker levels. The design pulls the TE and backside receiver into hook zones while the outside receivers work in-breaking routes to attack the intermediate middle of the field, and the fullback offers a checkdown option after chip blocking. The primary read progression starts with the inside hook route working against Mike or Sam linebacker drops, then moves to the curl or in route on the strong side, and finishes with the checkdown to the FB if the middle is jammed.
Defensive Reads
Pre snap, check safety alignment for two high shells, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave natural throwing windows for the hook and curl routes underneath the safeties. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if the Mike linebacker or Sam linebacker sink hard into the hook zone immediately, that signals zone coverage and confirms the read progression to the curl route. Identify user controlled defenders sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since a smart Mike linebacker will jump the inside hook route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Man coverage with press corners and no safety help over the top will jump the hook and curl breaks quickly, so be ready to hot route into option routes or quick outs against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks. Blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge or through A gaps can collapse the pocket before the second read develops, so check protection or use the FB as a checkdown valve against known blitz tendencies.
Usage Tips
Attack Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells since the hook and in routes settle in the zone voids between the underneath defenders and the deep safeties.
Check the depth of the middle linebacker pre snap, if he is sitting shallow expect him to sink into the hook zone and take away your first read, so be ready to progress to the curl or in route immediately.
Use hot routes to convert the backside receiver into a quick out or speed out against man coverage looks, since the base hook concept can get picky against tight man coverage from press corners.
Pair this play with HB Gut or Counter F to keep base personnel on the field while disguising run versus pass intent, forcing the defense to respect the run threat before committing to zone drops.
Best used on second and medium or third and short situations where the sit and settle routes give the quarterback easy access to the middle of the field without needing a deep shot.
