H Counter Strg is a power run play out of Weak I with 22 personnel that pulls the backside guard and puller to lead through the strongside hole after showing initial flow away from the point of attack. The offensive line down blocks to seal the frontside while the fullback and pulling lineman climb to the second level to clear out linebackers, creating a misdirection look that punishes overaggressive run fits. The primary read is the frontside linebacker and the alley defender: if they bite on the initial counter step, the HB presses the crease off the pulling guard, and if the edge defender crashes down hard the HB can bounce it outside the kick out block.
Key the frontside linebacker's first step at the snap, if he flows hard to the initial backfield action before the counter hits, that confirms he is a run flow defender who will get sealed by the pulling guard. Watch the strongside defensive end or edge player, if he crashes inside on the down block he opens the bounce lane outside, if he sits and reads he can blow up the pulling lineman's angle. Identify two deep safeties versus a single high safety pre-snap, single high shells typically mean an extra man in the box crowding the counter's designed gap, which forces a quicker decision to bounce outside. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the hole reading the mesh point, a smart user defender who stays home instead of flowing with the fake can blow up the play at the point of attack. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can outrun the pulling blockers, so if you see a walked up slot corner or overload pressure look, expect the counter to get strung out and be ready to cut it back immediately.
Run this out of run-heavy personnel packages on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the defense respects the run fit and bites on the counter action.
Watch the linebacker depth and flow pre-snap: if the Mike and Will are sitting tight to the line with no delay, they are primed to overreact to the counter step and open the cutback lane.
Pair this with Counter F and HB Gut in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing on direction, since all three plays start with similar backfield action but hit different gaps.
Against aggressive gap-shooting fronts or heavy blitz packages, this play hits fast because the pulling blockers create natural rerouting on blitzing linebackers.
Use PA Waggle or 95 Willie later in the series once the defense starts flowing hard to the counter action, since the play-action look off similar footwork will freeze second level defenders.
