Counter F out of Weak I is a power run play built to attack the backside edge with a pulling blocking scheme. The diagram shows the HB taking a counter step before hitting the hole behind the fullback and pulling guard, with the offensive line blocking down to create a natural wall while the backside guard or fullback wraps to lead through the alley. The lone wideout runs a vertical release to occupy the corner and hold the deep defender honest, but this is strictly a run play with no route combo to read. Primary progression for the ball carrier is to press the line of scrimmage, read the down blocks, and follow the puller through the designated crease before bouncing outside if the alley is sealed.
Watch the defensive line stunts before the snap since Counter F is vulnerable to a fast three technique or edge defender crashing down and blowing up the pulling lineman. Check linebacker depth: if they are stacked tight to the line with quick trigger tendencies, this counter action can get eaten in the backfield. A single high safety look with the box loaded is a good indicator the defense expects run and may be selling out to stop it. On the user side, watch for a spy or a linebacker sitting in the exact gap the puller needs to reach, since a smart user defender flowing downhill can blow up the timing. If the defense is in a lighter nickel or dime personnel with only six in the box, Counter F has a much better chance of springing through the alley untouched.
Run this out of Weak I when you need a change of pace after establishing inside zone or HB Gut to keep the front guessing about direction. Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if linebackers shift their gap alignment, since Counter F depends on a clean lane for the puller to work through. If the defense shows a heavy box with an extra man in the alley, check to a play-action look like PA Waggle or TE Flat to punish overaggressive linebacker flow. Best called on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime packages. Pair it in a sequence with 94 Will or 95 Willie so the defense cannot key on counter action alone and starts biting on misdirection.
