Breakdown

PA Waggle out of Weak I H U Off is a play-action rollout that sells the fake to the strong side before the QB works to the boundary. Off the run fake, the play sends a corner route vertical up the seam from the inline TE alignment, a deep out breaking route from the slot to the flat area, and a shallow drag underneath crossing the formation while the backfield fake sets up a run action. This is a man beater and zone beater hybrid built around the naked rollout: the corner route stretches the deep third, the out clears the flat defender, and the drag gives the QB a checkdown against pressure. Primary read progression starts with the deep corner route, works down to the out breaking route in the flat, and finishes with the underneath drag as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. If they are stacked tight to the line expecting run, the drag and out route will have room underneath once they bite on the fake. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since this determines whether the corner route or out route is the higher percentage throw. Post-snap, key the flat defender or curl-flat player in zone coverage. If he sinks with the out route, the drag underneath opens up immediately. User a linebacker or safety to spy the QB rollout lane, since this play is vulnerable to a defender who stays home and mirrors the naked action instead of chasing the run fake. Against man coverage, look for a corner or safety jumping the out route early, which signals a good window for the corner route up the seam.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in play-action-friendly counts like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to sell the run fake off Weak I tendencies.

Check the safety alignment before the snap. Two high safeties usually mean the deep corner route will have a soft window against zone drops, while a single high safety means the out route becomes the primary target versus man coverage.

Hot route the drag into a deeper cross if you see linebackers sitting shallow in zone, since it gives the QB a bigger throwing lane on the rollout.

Pair this with HB Gut and Counter F earlier in a series so the defense respects the strong side run fake, then hit them with PA Waggle once linebackers start flowing hard to the play side.

On the rollout, manually control the QB and buy time by rolling with the flow of the play instead of resetting in the pocket, since the design wants the QB moving to create easy reads on the boundary.
