Zone Wk out of Strong I with H Tight Close is an inside zone run play that sends the offensive line and fullback flowing weak to create a natural cutback lane. The diagram shows the HB taking a weak side zone track behind the FB lead block while the two flanks (TE/WR on the vertical release lines) hold their blocks or run off coverage rather than working route combos. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the play side double teams first, then working backside cutback if the weak side gap gets clogged.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify where the strong safety is aligned since Zone Wk attacks away from the strength call and exposes light boxes on the weak side. Check linebacker depth: if the weak side backer is playing downhill at 4 yards or closer, this play has a shorter window to develop before contact. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and weak side linebacker flow, if they get sealed by the FB and OL climb, the cutback lane opens immediately behind the play side double team. This run gets shut down by defenses that stay disciplined with gap integrity and use a spy or lurking user linebacker sitting in the cutback lane, so avoid this call against heavy run blitz fronts stacking the weak side A or B gap. Man and zone coverage shells do not matter much here since there is no route combo, but watch for a jumped run blitz timing that beats the FB block before the zone flow develops.
Usage Tips
Run this weak side zone when the defense shows a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with the strong safety cheated toward the TE side, since that leaves the weak side backer isolated on the FB. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box you have a numbers advantage to hit this downhill. Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay on schedule and set up PA Slide or Stutter Go's later since both look identical out of the same Strong I H Tight Close alignment. If the defense stacks the weak side with an extra linebacker or shows blitz, audible to Power O or Counter Weak from this same set to attack the opposite edge. Watch for a crashing weak side DE, if he squeezes hard, bounce the run outside using the natural cutback the diagram sets up.
