Breakdown

Slot Drive out of Singleback Y Trips Close Wing is a levels-based passing concept built to attack underneath zone defenders and create natural picks against man coverage. The trips side runs a drive combo with a shallow crosser working underneath a dig or in-breaking route from the slot, while the backside receiver and TE work as outlet options against off coverage. This is a man beater first thanks to the natural rub created by the drive concept, though it also holds up against zone since the shallow route sits below linebacker drops and settles in the void. Your primary read starts with the shallow crosser coming across the field, then progresses to the deeper in-cut route as the shallow clears the traffic, with the backside check down as your final bailout.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 3 or Cover 4 since the deep zone drop from the flat defender will determine how much window you get on the drive route. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap. If he sits shallow and does not widen with the crosser, the drive concept will get clogged and you should progress immediately to your check down. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone are the biggest threat to this concept, so look for a defender sitting still near the numbers instead of dropping with their assignment. Cover 2 man and blitz packages that bring extra pressure off the edge can disrupt the timing of this play, so check protection or hot route your back into a check release if you see a numbers advantage for the defense on the edge. This concept struggles against pure zone match coverages where linebackers sink into the crosser's lane, so if you see two off ball linebackers reading the quarterback's eyes at the snap, be ready to reset to your backside outlet quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the shallow crosser and drive route both develop quickly and give you a high floor option.

Check the middle of the field pre-snap. If you see a single high safety, expect man coverage underneath and trust the rub action to spring the shallow crosser open against man defenders.

Against two high shells, hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route or hitch to stretch the zone horizontally since the underneath defenders will sit and squeeze the drive concept.

Pair this with Mesh or Shallow X-Dig in your play calling sequence since both attack similar shallow zones but from different formation looks, forcing the defense to declare coverage rules before you diagnose which one to run.

If you are getting jumped by a user linebacker sitting on the shallow route, motion the slot receiver pre-snap or hot route him vertical into a seam to punish that aggressive positioning.
