Breakdown

Mtn X-Go Dig is a trips-based passing concept built off the Singleback Y Trips Close Wing formation that combines a deep go route from the X receiver with an underneath dig to attack both zone and man coverage. The go route occupies the deep cornerback and safety help, opening up the intermediate middle of the field for the dig route to settle into soft spots or sit down in front of trailing man defenders. Your primary read starts with the X receiver's go route on any single high look or blown coverage, then progresses to the dig sitting in the honey hole against zone drops or working across the field against man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment pre-snap, since this tells you the go route has a strong chance of winning one on one against Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch for cornerback press alignment on the X receiver, because press man coverage with a single high safety is the ideal matchup for the go route to blow past coverage. Key the middle linebacker's depth and drop after the snap, since a shallow drop into the dig window will force you to hold the ball longer and look for the go route or a checkdown. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where two deep safeties can double the go route and rob the dig, since this shuts down the deep read and forces you to rely on underneath options. Watch for user blitzers coming off the edge or through the A gap, since this route combo takes time to develop and any unaccounted pressure will collapse the pocket before routes fully break.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap to determine if this is a single high shell, because the go route becomes your first read against Cover 3 or Cover 1 where the deep defender has to respect the trips side. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells, work the dig route immediately since the two deep safeties will bracket the go route and take away the vertical shot. Hot route the underneath backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see the defense rotating extra defenders to the trips side, giving yourself a checkdown against overloaded blitz looks. Use this play on second and medium or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone coverage, since the dig route needs time to develop and settle into the window. Pair this play with Mtn PA Boot Rt earlier in a series to sell the same formation with play-action, then come back to X-Go Dig once the defense starts jumping underneath routes.
