Breakdown

Mtn PA Boot Rt is a play-action rollout out of Singleback Y Trips Close Wing that pulls the offensive line to sell a mountain run fake before the quarterback rolls right on a naked boot. The trips side runs a mountain concept clearing out underneath and deep zones while the backside Y tight end works across the field on a delayed drag or over route as the boot's built in outlet. Primary read starts with the deep out or corner route from the trips side, then works down to the underneath flat route created by the boot action, and finally back to the tight end crossing as the checkdown if the pocket rollout gets contained.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebackers flowing hard to the run fake side, if they overcommit the flat and drag routes behind them will be wide open on the boot side Identify two high safety shells before the snap, since cover 2 or cover 4 shells will have a corner sitting on the deep out route and can undercut the throw Look for a spy or contain defender staying home on the boot side edge, this is the biggest indicator the defense has scouted the play-action rollout and will collapse the pocket quickly Check for man coverage indicators like corners lined up outside the trips receivers with no safety help over the top, this tells you the deep out and tight end crosser will win against trail defenders Beware of a nano blitz or edge pressure package attacking the play side offensive tackle, since the rollout mesh point can get disrupted before the quarterback fully clears the pocket

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or second and short when defenses are keying run action off Mtn HB Zone Wk in the same set to maximize the play fake sell

Check the play clock and defensive personnel before the snap, this works best against base personnel and linebackers who bite hard on run fakes

If you see a single high safety shell, prioritize the deep out breaking route on the trips side since the boot pulls the flat defender and stresses the numbers advantage

Hot route the tight end into a shallow drag if you diagnose man coverage pre-snap, giving you a rhythm throw on the move against a defender trapped in trail technique

Pair this play with Mtn HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on the run action, then hit them with the boot rollout when they start crashing down
