H Zone Str is a strong side zone run out of Singleback Bunch Base with 21 personnel, using the bunch alignment to create natural rub blocks and confuse edge defenders on the frontside. The offensive line and fullback execute zone steps to the strength of the formation, with the H back leading through the hole to pick off the first defender past the line of scrimmage. This is a run play, not a pass or RPO, so your primary read is the frontside linebacker fit and whether the defensive line is stacking blocks or shooting gaps, letting the back press the hole and cut off the H back's lead block accordingly.
Pre-snap, identify the strong side linebacker depth and alignment since a walked up backer signals a quick fill read while a backed off backer suggests zone drop responsibilities that open cutback lanes. Watch for safety rotation toward the bunch formation, as an extra safety in the box usually means the defense is selling out to stop the strong side zone run. User the play side linebacker manually if you are on defense, since this play lives and dies on whether that backer reads the zone steps correctly and fills the hole without hesitating. Nano blitzes off the edge from a 4-3 or 3-4 front can blow this play up before the H back gets to his block, so look for defensive ends crashing hard upfield pre-snap. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with aggressive run support shut this down quickly, while two-high shells with light boxes give the strong side zone room to develop.
Run this early in a series to establish tendencies before pivoting to PA Ctr Waggle or PA Zone WK off the same look since the bunch alignment disguises run and pass equally well.
Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or more defenders stacked to the strong side, consider audibling to H Misdirection Str or HB Counter to attack the weak side instead.
Use the H back's lead block as your key. If the play side linebacker crashes hard, cut the run back inside behind the fullback for a cutback lane.
This play thrives on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are still base personnel and have not committed extra run defenders into the box.
