Breakdown

PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action bootleg concept out of Singleback Bunch Base that sells inside zone action to the backfield before the QB rolls out to the waggle side. The offensive line executes a run blocking scheme to sell center run fake while the bunch receivers work a combination of a shallow drag, a deep crosser, and a corner or flat route to attack the edge the QB is booting toward. This is a play-action man and zone beater designed to hold the backside linebackers and safety with run fake conflict, and the primary read progression starts with the flat or drag route underneath, moves to the intermediate crosser sitting down in the void, and finishes with the deep corner route as the shot play against overaggressive run support.

Defensive Reads

Read the linebacker depth immediately after the snap: if they step up hard on the run fake, the crosser and corner routes will be wide open behind them. Identify single high versus two high shells pre-snap since Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenses with aggressive run fits get gashed by this concept when the edge defender chases the play fake. Watch for a scraping defensive end or edge rusher who stays home on the boot side, since a disciplined contain rusher can force the QB to check down early or take a sack. Key the flat defender or curl to flat zone player: if he sinks with the crosser instead of staying on the flat route, the underneath flat throw is wide open for an easy pickup. Beware of user controlled linebackers spying the QB on the rollout, as a smart user can jump the crosser route or force an errant throw if the QB holds the ball too long.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like first or second and medium to short yardage so the run fake actually threatens the defense and linebackers bite on the play action.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep and cheating to the pass, the run fake has less impact but the crosser and flat combo still work versus zone drops.

Hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or drag if you diagnose man coverage so the QB has an immediate answer against blitz look before the roll fully develops.

Pair this with HB Counter and H Power Toss from the same set so defenses respect the run fake tendency, then hit them with PA Ctr Waggle once linebackers start flowing hard to the counter or toss side.

Use PA Ctr Waggle after establishing Seattle or Spacing in the same drive so linebackers sit shallow expecting quick game, opening up the deep corner shot on the boot side.
