PA Verticals out of Singleback Bunch Base uses play-action to freeze the second level while sending four receivers vertically from the bunch alignment to attack the deep third and deep half zones. The offensive line executes a run-action fake before sliding into pass protection, which means this is not a true dropback and the QB needs a clean pocket to let routes develop downfield. This is a certified Cover 2 beater and Cover 3 beater because it overloads the deep zones with more vertical threats than defenders can cover, and the primary read progression starts outside with the boundary vertical before working back inside to the seam route that splits the safeties or the hole between the corner and safety on the field side.
Watch for two deep safeties pre-snap, if they stay high and do not rotate down into the box this is a Cover 2 shell that leaves the seam route open between the flat defender and the safety. Check linebacker depth before the snap, stacked or shallow linebackers are more likely to bite on the run fake and vacate the middle of the field for your seam and post routes. Post-snap, key the safety rotation, if both safeties break to the same side you are likely facing Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the single high defender cannot cover all four verticals, so attack the opposite hash. Look for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate zone, a smart human opponent will spy the seam route with a linebacker or nickel defender, so be ready to work outside to the boundary vertical if the middle is jammed. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells that keep four defenders deep, and it is vulnerable to delayed blitzes or nano blitzes that beat the play-action protection before your routes clear the linebacker level.
Sell the run fake by holding the ball at the mesh point as long as possible before your eyes go downfield, since a lazy play-action fake tips off linebackers and lets them sit on the verticals.
Use this play on early downs like first and second and short when the defense is likely to bite on run action, especially if you have already established the run with HB Counter or H Zone Str earlier in the drive.
Identify the safety shell before the snap, if you see two high safeties cheating deep it is a Cover 2 shell and you want to hit the seam route in the honey hole between the corner and safety, if you see one high safety rotating late it is likely Cover 3 and you take the outside vertical against a single deep defender.
Hot route the underneath back or TE into a shallow drag or flat route if you expect a blitz, this gives you a checkdown against man pressure and protects against sacks when the play-action fake pulls extra defenders in.
Pair this play with PA Ctr Waggle and PA Zone WK in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders guessing between rollout action and standard verticals, forcing linebackers to respect run fakes on every snap and opening natural throwing lanes.
