Z Option is a pass play out of Singleback Bunch Base that isolates the Z receiver on an option route, letting him break in, out, or sit down based on the leverage of the defender covering him. The bunch alignment creates natural rub potential for the other receivers, helping the option route release clean off the line versus man coverage. This is primarily a man beater since the option route lives on reading defender leverage, though the sit down component gives it value as a soft zone beater against off coverage or zone drops with soft underneath. The primary read starts with the Z option route, then progresses to the shorter in-breaking or drag concept coming from the bunch before checking down to the backfield outlet.
Read the leverage of the corner or slot defender over the Z receiver pre-snap, since inside leverage signals the option route should break outside and outside leverage signals it should break inside. Watch for a user defender lurking in the shallow flat or hook zone, since a smart user can jump the option route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Identify press man alignment on the bunch, which slows releases and can delay the option route timing, making it more susceptible to a well timed blitz. Check safety depth before the snap, since two deep shells often bring underneath zone defenders who can rob the option route if it settles instead of continuing to work. Recognize man blitz packages off the edge, since Z Option's quick developing route can be a good answer to beat pressure if the quarterback gets the ball out on time.
Motion out of the bunch pre-snap to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since a defender following the motion man confirms man coverage and tells you the Z option route has a favorable one-on-one matchup.
Against off coverage or soft corners, hot route the Z option to break outward quickly for an easy pitch and catch on early downs.
Against press man, let the option route work naturally since the bunch alignment gives a free release and rub chance against tight coverage.
Pair Z Option with PA Verticals or PA Ctr Waggle from the same set to keep linebackers honest, then come back to Z Option once the defense starts sitting on run action.
Use this on second and medium or third and short since the option route conversion versus off coverage or zone gives a high floor completion.
Sequence Z Option with Spacing or Seattle to condition the defense to expect quick underneath throws, then hit the option route vertically once corners start jumping short routes.
