HB Counter out of Singleback Bunch Base is a power run play that pulls the backside guard (and often a tackle or fullback-type lead blocker) across the formation to create a lead blocker at the point of attack, letting the HB press the play side before cutting back against the grain. The bunch alignment helps disguise the run by clustering blockers and eligible receivers, making it harder for the defense to key on the counter action pre-snap. The primary read progression is patience: identify the double team at the point of attack, key the pulling blocker to see if the hole opens inside or bounces outside, then locate the first unblocked second-level defender to set up your cut.
Pre-snap, check for a stacked box or a linebacker cheating toward the bunch side, this tips run blitz or gap exchange designed to beat pulling linemen. Look at safety depth: two deep safeties sitting at 10-plus yards signals the defense is playing coverage first, which usually means a lighter box and a favorable counter run lane. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, since disciplined ends who stay home on contain can blow up the counter before the puller arrives. Watch for linebackers reading the pulling guard and flowing quickly to the cutback lane, this is a sign of a scheme fit run defense that diagnoses counter quickly and will need a hard jab step to counter. Man coverage on the bunch receivers combined with an overloaded blitz front is the biggest threat to this play, since extra rushers can beat the pulling blocker to the hole before the read develops.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing hard toward the strength of the bunch before the counter action pulls the other way.
Identify light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box before the snap since HB Counter thrives against light fronts and against defenses that overcommit to stopping outside zone.
Hot route the bunch receivers into quick stalk blocks or clear-out routes if you see a safety cheating down into the box, this removes an extra defender from the edge.
Pair this call with H Zone Str and H Zone WK earlier in a drive so linebackers start flowing hard on zone action, then hit them with the counter misdirection to gash the cutback lane.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short to medium) when you want balanced play calling and the threat of PA Ctr Waggle off the same look keeps safeties honest.
