Y Drive Clown lines up out of Shotgun Wing with 12 personnel and stacks a classic drive concept on the strong side. The inline TE runs the deep dig across the field (the drive route) while the wing TE underneath crosses shallow, creating a natural pick and stack that clears out underneath zones and rubs off man coverage. The backside receiver runs a deep corner route stemming outside, and the isolated X receiver on the far side runs a comeback style out breaker to give the QB a quick flat read on the opposite hash. This is a man beater built around the classic drive concept, with the primary read progressing from the shallow crosser to the deep dig, then working backside to the corner or comeback route if the drive side is capped.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and leverage since a single high shell tells you the dig route into the vacated middle is live all game. Watch the cornerback alignment on the backside X receiver, since press man on that comeback route is a strong indicator the defense is banking on a blitz or man beater answer elsewhere. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, since a fast sink into the shallow crosser lane signals a Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shell designed to take away the drive concept entirely. Look for a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow crossing lane, since that lurk threat is the primary danger to the underneath read and forces the QB to climb the ladder to the dig or corner route. This play struggles against disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 2 zone drops that stay square on the TEs, so if you see safeties rotating late with corners squatting on the underneath stuff, be ready to check the corner route or bail to a different play in the set.
Usage Tips
Use this play on second and medium to third and medium situations where linebackers are more willing to sink into shallow zones and open up the deep dig window. Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with tight alignment on the TEs, since the natural rub from the drive concept forces late reroutes and separation on the shallow crosser. If you see a single high safety shell, prioritize the deep dig read since the middle of the field should be voided by the rotation. Hot route the backside comeback into a hitch or speed out against soft zone coverage to get the ball out quicker and protect against a delayed pressure look. Pair this play with HB Angle or Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep defenders honest on both the underneath crossers and the flat, then come back to Y Drive Clown once the defense starts jumping the shallow routes.
